Two-Phase Treatment
What is the advantage of two-phase orthodontic treatment?
Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a specialized process that encompasses tooth straightening with physical and facial changes. The major advantage of a two-phase treatment when necessary is to maximize the opportunity to accomplish the ideal healthy, functional, aesthetic result that will remain stable throughout your life.
Phase 1: Foundation for a lifetime of beautiful teeth
Some children exhibit early signs of jaw problems as they grow and develop. If children older than six are found to have this jaw discrepancy, they are candidates for Phase 1 orthodontic treatment.
Because they are growing rapidly, children can benefit enormously from an early phase (Phase 1) of orthodontic treatment. Phase 1 utilizes appliances that direct the growth relationship of the upper and lower jaws establishing a good foundation and providing adequate room for eruption of all permanent teeth. Leaving certain conditions untreated until the permanent teeth come in could result in issues too severe to achieve ideal results with braces alone. This early correction may prevent later removal of permanent teeth and/or surgical procedures.
A successful Phase 1 creates room for permanent teeth to find an eruption path. Without room to come in, they may become impacted or severely displaced.
Resting Period
After Phase 1, there is a resting period of six months to four years with observation appointments every three to six months. During the resting period, the remaining permanent teeth are allowed to erupt. Selective removal of certain primary (baby) teeth may be necessary to assist with eruption during this resting phase.
Retainers are utilized to maintain tooth position until permanent teeth begin to erupt. Once the retainers no longer fit they may interfere with eruption so at the proper time, Dr. Diehl will discontinue them. It is best to allow these new permanent teeth freedom of movement while final eruption occurs. Keep in mind that at the end of Phase 1, the teeth are not in their final positions. This will be accomplished in Phase 2.
Phase 2 Treatment
The goal of Phase 2 is to make sure each tooth is in the exact location in the mouth where it is in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue and other teeth. When this equilibrium is established, the teeth will function together properly.
Phase 2 will require a second set of orthodontic records and a new treatment plan and consultation. Patients in Phase 2 will be in braces for approximately 12-24 months. After braces, retainers should be worn to ensure you retain your beautiful smile.
